Charmed Life Picks
Scott Memmer of Charmed Life has alot of ideas about guitar picks. He is enthusiastic about casein picks, but has noticed that they tend to run a bit thick. This is great for people accustomed to 2mm guitar picks, but that's actually considered "heavy" by most standards.
Scott developed a process to create casein picks a little bit thinner, while still maintaining enough strength to be reliable. This is very important because the thickness of the pick is actually in some ways more important than the material. You cannot meaningfully compare two types of pick material when the picks themselves are different gauges.
Charmed Life's thinner casein pick is the perfect starting point if you're curious about the material; you can directly compare it to another pick in your collection of a similar size and thickness.
Material: Casein (Natural)
Casein's fans believe that it is the closest thing to natural tortoiseshell. This bioplastic is made out of milk proteins and bonded together with formaldehyde. It's actually a relatively old technology; the boutique picks that are made with it are expensive primarily because the material is not as easy to work with as other plastics.
