Improv with ii-V’s Moving By Half-Step
Introduction
This chord progression is a series of ii-V’s that descend by half-step. It is symmetrical, meaning the last ii-V resolves by half-step again to the first ii-V, and the cycle repeats..
The Chord Progression
Materials to Use
For each ii-V (every two measures), simple use the Dorian scale for the ii chord. Modulate the scale down by moving it down one fret every two measures.
If you need more practice here, consider practicing with our lesson on modulating ii-V's.
E Dorian (Measure 1)
E♭ Dorian (Measure 3)
D Dorian (Measure 5)
Continue in this fashion until you get back to E, and repeat the E Dorian scale at Fret XII.
Backing Track
